The Lucy Rose of Sharon, ‘Hibiscus syriacus,’ may be trained as a single trunk tree or espalier, or allowed to grow naturally as an upright, multi-stemmed shrub. This deciduous plant is vigorous and erect, growing to a height of eight to twelve feet. Its leaves are diamond shaped, dark green, somewhat palmate and toothed. This variety bears double red-pink flowers. The flowers are present from late summer until mid fall. Larger flower heads may be obtained by pruning back hard to two or three buds in the early spring. This Rose of Sharon is very tolerant of summer heat and humidity.

The Geranium Appleblossom, ‘Pelargonium x hortorum,’ produces beautiful soft pink double flowers, which are complemented nicely by distinct leaf zoning.

Having an upright growth habit and great landscape performance, these plants are commonly used as a bedding or container plant that is grown in almost every region of the country. The plants feature succulent leaves and stems.

Geraniums should be planted in ordinary well-drained soil. Too much fertilization will result in excessive foliage with fewer flowers. To promote extra bushiness, the shoots should be pinched off. Deadheading of spend flowers will promote enhanced flowering.
